Thanks to the dedication and hard work of 29 Grade 6 students, over 1,000 items have been collected and donated to two animal charities, The Calgary Humane Society and ARF.
After ARF volunteers Carol Van Koughnett and Herb Grieder visited Fairview School with puppies and did a presentation about ARF, the students decided to spring into action and organize ways to help.
For two months, Fairview School’s 6TA class held a donation drive and raised awareness throughout their school, coming up with many unique ways to spread the word. They spoke at assemblies, made weekly announcements, and wrote and typed all communications, including both community and school newsletters. The class contacted several radio stations and had responses from AMP Radio and Lite 96.
Students performed at their school talent show to raise awareness and put up posters around the school. They created a "two can" day, meaning for every can of pet food brought in for donation a student could, or “can”, wear casual clothes to school. Each student donated a dollar to buy prizes for a raffle and students could earn one raffle ticket for each stuffed animal brought in. They hosted a pet lover's club at lunch and a young girl and her father made a dog house for ARF to display in the school lobby.
Between these fun and creative ideas and visiting every class in the school, the students of 6TA went above and beyond to bring attention to their cause. The effort of these students was amazing as they did all of the planning and organizing, making committees and appointing chairs to ensure all of the many details were covered.
The two month campaign wrapped up on Friday March 9th, 2012, with a full day public drop and radio coverage from Lite 96.
